1 $2 million for the Suns Expansion Team
The team became Phoenix's first (major) professional sports squad, during the 1968-1969 NBA season. Johnny "Red" Kerr was the first coach of the Phoenix Suns, and earned the "Coach of the Year" award during the 1968-1969 season. Meanwhile, Dick Van Arsdale was the first player that the Suns chose. Interestingly, many critics of the new expansion team's location argued that the region's basketball market wasn't big enough for a professional basketball team. They were wrong.
